Do Monarch Caterpillars Eat Each Other?

Monarch caterpillars are primarily herbivores and feed almost exclusively on milkweed plants. However, they can exhibit cannibalistic behavior under certain conditions. When Milkweed resources are scarce or when they are in crowded conditions, caterpillars might resort to eating eggs, smaller caterpillars, or even molting siblings. This behavior can be a survival strategy, as consuming another caterpillar provides valuable nutrients.

Monarch caterpillars are primarily herbivores and feed almost exclusively on milkweed plants.

However, it’s essential to note that cannibalism is not typical behavior for Monarch caterpillars under normal conditions. When they have ample milkweed and space, they will focus on feeding on the plant. If you’re raising Monarchs and notice cannibalistic behavior, it might be a sign to provide more food or space for the caterpillars.
